Blood and skin cells found on 75-million-year-old dinosaur bones:

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 03:21 PM

Red blood cells and the remains of skin from dinosaurs more than 75 million years old have been discovered by scientists.
Palaeontologists found the rare soft tissue on eight dinosaur fossils that have spent more than a century in storage at the Natural History Museum in London.
The discovery is expected to result in scientists re-examining other old fossils with modern techniques in an attempt to find soft tissue that may be preserved there.

While soft tissue has been found on dinosaur fossils in the past, it is extremely rare and has only ever been found in extremely well preserved samples subject to unusual conditions after death.
In most cases it was thought the organic tissue like skin, muscle and blood would quickly decay away after death leaving just the harder bones to mineralise and become fossils.

COULD SOFT TISSUE BE USED TO CLONE DINOSAURS?
With the release of Jurassic World in cinemas, the idea of cloning extinct dinosaurs from DNA extracted from insects preserved in amber is receiving new attention.
In the original Jurassic Park scientists extract 80-million-year-old DNA from mosquitoes trapped in amber.
However, recent research has shown that DNA is unlikely to ever survive that long.
But the discovery of proteins like collagen on fossilised dinosaur remains will raise hopes that it may be possible to find remaining DNA.
However, even if that is possible, the fragments will be too small to allow scientists to ever hope to build a genome complete enough to clone the ancient reptiles and bring them back to life.
Indeed, red blood cells, like those found in the most recent study, contain no genetic material at all.
With the discovery of collagen fibres - a particularly strong protein - it may be possible to reconstruct the short gene that codes for them by studying the structure of the protein.
However, even that may be pushing what is possible as the level of preservation may not be good enough.

Feminists Find Amy Schumer's Raunchy Sex Speech 'Empowering' : Trey Sanchez

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 01:38 PM

Amy Schumer, star of Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer, has found a place in the hearts of feminists everywhere for standing up against misogyny and society's unhealthy obsession with judging women's bodies, beauty and sexual habits. Interestingly, she has paved this path through raunchy, sex-filled sketch and stand-up comedy.

She is not breaking ground to be the first female comedian to take this approach, but she is the current media darling and rising star for feminism. Celebuzz! loves her so much, they dubbed her "Our Heroic Goddess of Comedy":   http://www.celebuzz.com/2015-06-05/amy-schumer-instagram-follow-heroic-comedy-goddess-photos/

Amy Schumer is unapologetically the controversial, heroic, unabashed feminist comedian we love and need, and for that and one hundred thousand reasons more, she is this week's Instant Follow Friday.

Other media outlets are joining the chorus due to Schumer's recent acceptance speech after winning the Trailblazer of the Year award given by Glamour magazine. Entertainment Weekly said her "filthy" speech is a "must-watch" and called it "empowering." Time agreed that it was empowering and added that it was "crazy funny."  http://www.ew.com/article/2015/06/04/amy-schumer-glamour-awards-speech

The line from the speech that is getting the most attention is when Schumer said: "I'm like 160 pounds right now, and I can catch a d*** whenever I want."

The rules are changing because this is not considered sexist, it is now feminism.

Mic.com's Kate Hakala explained why this is apparently so groundbreaking [uncensored]: http://mic.com/articles/120127/here-s-what-really-makes-amy-schumer-s-catch-a-dick-speech-so-great?utm_source=Mic+Check&utm_campaign=aa879ca9c1-MicCheck_June_5_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_51f2320b33-aa879ca9c1-285312425

Words matter: While Schumer's joke might be crass, that's the point — and it's more important than we realize. "Catch a dick" is the type of offhanded but sexually charged phrase we'd normally hear from a man, someone who "scores" or "totally banged" someone or "blow your load."

By using "catch a dick" (which, let's just note, is an excellent phrase) to note her weight doesn't make her less sexually desirable, Schumer is co-opting the language of objectification and giving herself sexual agency. In a culture where women still refrain from boldly talking about their sexuality in and out of the bedroom, and where women are hesitant to use typically male words (see: "jerk off"), Schumer's frankness is not only hilarious — it's empowering.                       http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/feminists-find-amy-schumers-raunchy-sex-speech-empowering-women

Boston City Hall Gets Gender Neutral Bathrooms : Sarah Fisher

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 01:31 PM

If you have any business to conduct in Boston City Hall, you will be able to share the bathroom with people of the opposite sex or any sex for that matter.   http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/06/11/boston-city-hall-gender-neutral-bathrooms/71072930/?AID=10709313&PID=4003003&SID=iauyn3plf000q12r00dth

"Mayor Martin J. Walsh established gender-neutral bathrooms in Boston's City Hall Thursday, according to a statement from the city. The move comes during Boston's Pride Week, which celebrates the LGBT community and raises awareness of discrimination."     http://www.cityofboston.gov/news/default.aspx?id=20163

USA Today explains the new bathrooms "can be used by anyone including individuals who may identify as transgender, caregivers helping someone of another gender and parents with small children."

Children.

"Boston thrives on diversity, and is an inclusive city," Walsh said in the statement. "This change will foster a safe and welcoming environment for employees and visitors."

The bathrooms are located outside the Mayor's office and the city council chambers.

"Gender-neutral bathrooms are important in providing a safe place for all people to use the facilities when needed without fear of harassment by others," Ruben Hopwood, a coordinator of the Transgender Health Program at Fenway Health, said in a statement, responding to the news.         http://www.cityofboston.gov/news/default.aspx?id=20163

Harvard Adds 'Privilege Check' to Orientation : Bradford Thomas

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 01:24 PM

Harvard's Kennedy School of Government is adding a new requirement for all students in orientation, a new class/race/gender "privilege check." The new program comes in response to demands from students activists and administrators who insist that it's time for the university to require students to "critically examine power and privilege."

As New York Magazine's Kat Stoeffel explains, privilege is "a catchall term for the perks an individual enjoys in society because of his race, gender, or class" and is being increasingly used in universities to analyze social inequality. The term is often directed at white males to call into question the legitimacy of their achievements.

Stoeffel quotes one pro-privilege check Harvard master's student, Reetu Mody, who explains that the required course would help those privileged (white male) students manage their "loss of identity":

"If what you've been told all your life is you're really talented and you deserve what you have, it's going to be really hard to find out Maybe I don't deserve it, and all these other people equally deserve it but never even had a shot," she says. "Schools are not giving students a space to manage that loss of identity."

She says most of the resistance to discussing privilege comes from those who (mistakenly) believe it's about making individuals feel guilty. That's why Mody thinks Kennedy School of Government makes a good pilot program for institutionalized privilege-checking. For them, examining the world and your position in it isn't just a feel-good liberal intellectual exercise; it's a practical tool for people who hope to be leaders.

Last month, Mody and other student activists held a "privilege walk" in which 77 students took over the school's courtyard and led a "privilege visualization exercise." That protest helped put pressure on administrators to concede to the new required privilege curriculum. While administrators announced Friday that they would add the privilege check, the specifics of the orientation program have not yet been decided:                                                                                                      http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/harvard-adds-privilege-check-orientation

THIS WEEK IN PROGRESSIVE LUNACY: UC Faculty Trained to Banish Microaggressions : Trey Sanchez

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 01:19 PM

Janet Napolitano wants her professors to stop saying, "America is the land of opportunity."                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Janet Napolitano, former secretary of Homeland Security and current president of the University of California, has been offering training to faculty members so that they can identify and correct any implicit bias, or microaggressions, within themselves so that all students feel included and accepted on campus.

The seminars define implicit bias and microaggressions as such:

Implicit Bias: "A positive or negative mental attitude towards a person, thing, or group that a person holds at an unconscious level."

Microaggressions: "The everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership."

A spreadsheet distributed to attendees helped professors identify their own microaggressions and helped them understand what messages they may be unconsciously sending to their students. Here are just a few examples:

Asking any non-white student, "Where are you from or where were you born?" is like saying, "You are not a true American."
Saying to a woman of color, "I would have never guessed that you were a scientist," is really telling them that, "It is unusual for a woman to have strong mathematical skills."
If a professor says, "America is a melting pot," they aren't acknowledging that race exists and therefore are really denying individuality and demanding them to "assimilate to the dominant culture."
If a student of color is roaming around the hallways and a faculty member asks if they are lost, they would thus be making the assumption that this person is trying to break into one of the classrooms. The message sent is, "You are a criminal," or "You are dangerous."
Saying, as President Obama often does, "America is the land of opportunity," or "Everyone can succeed in this society, if they work hard enough" could somehow be translated as meaning "people of color are lazy and/or incompetent and need to work harder." (Perhaps Napoltiano should send the president an invite to one of these seminars to correct his microaggression.)
Using the pronoun "he" in reference to all people is off limits because it makes the statement that the "male experience is universal" while the "female experience is invisible."                                                                                                http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/week-progressive-lunacy-uc-faculty-trained-banish-microaggressions

Hillary to Voters; Trust Me! Major speech to come Saturday in NYC : Brian Lilley

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 01:12 PM

Hillary Clinton will use an outdoor rally in NYC on Saturday to push for voters to do the one things pollsters have been saying the American public is reluctant to do, trust her. The New York Times reports that Clinton will try to brush aside concerns that she is out of touch with the average American family as she rallies at an outdoor event.

It will be held in New York City on an island named for Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the shadow of diverse middle-class neighborhoods, as Mrs. Clinton tries to evoke the legacy of the New Deal and lay out her vision for a federal government substantially engaged in lifting American families that feel economically insecure and increasingly left behind.

And she will channel her personal hero, Eleanor Roosevelt, in emphasizing women's and civil rights and her assertion that the Republican Party is out of touch with an increasingly diverse electorate. Her plans were described by people briefed on the speech who were not authorized to discuss it for attribution before the campaign officially released details.

A recent CNN poll found that 57% thought that Clinton was not honest or trustworthy. http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2015/images/06/01/2016.poll.pdf

The Times quotes former Obama operative David Axelrod as saying,"She has to articulate an authentic, compelling rationale for her candidacy, a cause and vision that is larger than her own ambitions."

Despite being the only serious Democratic contender, Clinton appears to be failing to connect with voters.               http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/hillary-voters-trust-me

"What reality is there to the claim that white skin is privileged and black is not?"

from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 01:04 PM

For this Flashback Friday, TruthRevolt is reviving a Freedom Center pamphlet written by David Horowitz and John Perazzo called Black Skin Privilege and the American Dream. Sadly, it is an even more relevant and important read today than when it was published in early 2013:

When a Neighborhood Watch guard shot Trayvon Martin in February 2012, a chorus of civil rights activists concluded that he had been killed because of his race. Michael Skolnick, the political director for hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, spoke for the consensus in an article he titled, "White People You Will Never Look Suspicious."

Skolnick spoke for those who rushed to condemn the Watch Guard, George Zimmerman, calling him a racist and killer in advance of the evidence, and demanding his arrest. It was the pervasive theme of the outrage even though Zimmerman was of Peruvian descent and not "white." To make the racial case, Zimmerman's accusers labeled him a "white Hispanic," and disregarded the fact that he was Latino with a great-grandfather who was black. Speaking for the many, Congressional Black Caucus member Hank Johnson claimed that Martin was "executed for WWB in a GC—Walking While Black in a Gated Community." It was the unmistakable implication of President Obama's own statement on the case: "If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon." For the already convinced, Trayvon Martin was killed not because of anything he had done, but because he was a black man in a racist culture, and therefore racial prey.

As it happens, the term "white skin privilege" was first popularized in the 1970s by the SDS radicals of "Weatherman," who were carrying on a terrorist war against "Amerikkka," a spelling designed to stigmatize the United States as a nation of Klansmen. Led by presidential friends, Bill Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn, the Weather terrorists called on other whites to renounce their privilege and join a global race war already in progress.

Although their methods and style kept the Weather radicals on the political fringe, their views on race reflected those held by the broad ranks of the political left. In the following years, the concept of "white skin privilege" continued to spread until it became an article of faith among all progressives, a concept that accounted for everything that was racially wrong in America beginning with its constitutional founding. As Pax Christi USA, a Catholic organization, explained: "Law in the U.S. protects white skin privilege because white male landowners created the laws to protect their rights, their culture and their wealth." This was the theme of A People's History of the United States, the most popular book ever written on the subject, of university curricula across the nation.

Eventually, the concept of white skin privilege was embraced even by liberals who had initially resisted it as slander against a nation that had just concluded a historically unprecedented civil rights revolution. This was because the concept of white skin privilege provided an explanation for the fact that the recent Civil Rights Acts had not led to an equality of results, and that racial disparities persisted even as overt racists and institutional barriers were vanishing from public life.                             http://www.truthrevolt.org/commentary/flashback-friday-black-skin-privilege
