Inside 'The Wolfpack,' Six Brothers Who Grew Up Locked in an NYC Apartment By LAUREN EFFRON and GAIL DEUTSCH LAUREN EFFRON
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 12:25 PMTucked away in Manhattan's Lower East Side, a family with seven children lived together in a small apartment for more than a decade, but almost no one knew they existed.
The Angulo family -- made up of father Oscar, his wife, Susanne, and their seven children -- lived on the 16th floor of a public housing development. But their neighbors never saw them.
"I've been here all my life, I don't know them," neighbor George Lauriano said. "They never came out to play... very unusual... we didn't know they existed."
Susanne's family, who hadn't heard from her in years, didn't know whether she was dead or alive, or had seven children.
"Many times, I thought, 'Wait a minute, let me roll back ... what are we doing here?' Susanne Angulo told "20/20." "Sometimes in life, we find ourselves being in situations and doing things, and how one thing leads to another and suddenly, 'Whoa, how did I get here?'"
The children -- one daughter and six sons -- were raised in four small rooms, homeschooled by their mother and trapped by their father, who allowed them to leave the apartment they shared only for rare, closely supervised outings.
"We weren't allowed out, outside of the home," son Narayana Angulo, 22, told "20/20" in an interview. "We were forbidden to communicate with anybody unless we were told otherwise."
They had one lifeline that connected them to the outside world: Their father's movie collection, with more than 2,000 films.
"I think, in a way, movies, they shaped us who we are," said Govinda Angulo, also 22 and Narayana's twin.
Until one day in April 2010, when one son, Mukunda, the third youngest who was 15 at the time, found the courage to break free.
The story of the Angulo family was revealed through a new documentary, "The Wolfpack," which opens in theaters nationwide June 19. The film focuses on the six brothers -- Bhagavan, Govinda, Narayana, Mukunda, Krisna (now Glenn) and Jagadesh (now Eddie) -- then ages 11 to 18, and their unusual upbringing, along with their passion for movies, so intense that they copied down entire scripts, constructed costumes and props, memorized lines and acted out entire scenes. Check back to ABCNews.com/2020 for more on the Angulo family and tune into to ABC News' "20/20" Friday, June 19, at 10 p.m. ET to watch the full story. http://abcnews.go.com/2020
Today in History
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 12:17 PM
Today is Friday, June 12, the 163rd day of 2015. There are 202 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On June 12, 1965, the British government announced that The Beatles would each be made an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace later in the year; the selection sparked criticism, with some MBEs returning their medals in protest.
On this date:
In 1776, Virginia's colonial legislature became the first to adopt a Bill of Rights.
In 1920, the Republican national convention, meeting in Chicago, nominated Warren G. Harding for president on the tenth ballot; Calvin Coolidge was nominated for vice president.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge was nominated for a term of office in his own right at the Republican national convention in Cleveland. (Coolidge had become president in 1923 upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding.)
In 1939, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was dedicated in Cooperstown, New York.
In 1942, Anne Frank, a German-born Jewish girl living in Amsterdam, received a diary for her 13th birthday, less than a month before she and her family went into hiding from the Nazis.
In 1956, the Flag of the United States Army was officially adopted under an executive order signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In 1963, civil rights leader Medgar Evers, 37, was shot and killed outside his home in Jackson, Mississippi. (In 1994, Byron De La Beckwith was convicted of murdering Evers and sentenced to life in prison; he died in 2001.) One of Hollywood's most notoriously expensive productions, "Cleopatra," starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Rex Harrison, opened in New York.
In 1964, South African black nationalist Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison along with seven other people, including Walter Sisulu, for committing sabotage against the apartheid regime (all were eventually released, Mandela in 1990).
In 1967, the Supreme Court, in Loving v. Virginia, struck down state laws prohibiting interracial marriages.
In 1975, an Indian court found Prime Minister Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral corruption and barred her from holding office for six years; Gandhi rejected calls for her to resign.
In 1987, President Ronald Reagan, during a visit to the divided German city of Berlin, publicly challenged Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev to "tear down this wall."
In 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were slashed to death outside her Los Angeles home. (O.J. Simpson was later acquitted of the killings in a criminal trial, but was eventually held liable in a civil action.) Boeing's new 777 jetliner went on its first test flight.
Ten years ago: Vice President Dick Cheney, reacting to a growing chorus of calls to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, told Fox News Channel there were no plans to do so. American-educated professor and women's rights activist Massouma al-Mubarak was named Kuwait's first female Cabinet minister. At the LPGA Championship, Annika Sorenstam closed with a 1-over 73 for a three-shot victory over Michelle Wie, who shot a 69 to finish second.
Five years ago: A French fishing vessel rescued 16-year-old Abby Sunderland from her crippled sailboat in the turbulent southern Indian Ocean, ending the California teen's attempt to sail around the world solo. Ethnic riots wracked southern Kyrgyzstan, forcing thousands of Uzbeks to flee as their homes. Daniel Nava hit the first pitch he saw as a big leaguer for a grand slam — only the second player to do it — leading the Boston Red Sox to a 10-2 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies.
One year ago: During a tightly controlled tour of a converted warehouse at Port Hueneme, California, a government official said the number of migrant children housed at the facility after they were caught entering the country illegally could more than triple to 575 by the following week. The World Cup opened in Brazil with the home team beating Croatia, 3-1, after a funky opening ceremony featuring Jennifer Lopez and dancers dressed as trees.

Burn: Bristol Palin Utterly Destroys Miley Cyrus For Comments About Christianity
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 12:07 PMEarlier this week, pop star Miley Cyrus made several disparaging remarks about Christians and conservatives. Her profanity-laced tirade, which accompanied a nude photo shoot in the latest issue of Paper, included her assertion that Bible stories are "f—king insane" and a denunciation of her own parents as "conservative-a—motherf—kers."
Among the countless offended Americans to respond online was Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol. In a blog post Thursday, she took on Cyrus by calling out a glaring hypocrisy she saw identified in the Paper interview. After describing herself as the least judgmental person ever, Cyrus launched into her vulgar attack on Christianity, Palin noted.
"Is it just me or does it seem more than a little fake that someone claiming to be accepting of everyone and everything would spew such judgment towards her own parents and their deeply held religious beliefs?" she wrote.
Palin concluded by suggesting Cyrus is just reflecting the prevailing sentiment of today's leftist entertainment industry. "Oh, Miley," she wrote. "Thanks for giving us the best example of what 'tolerance' looks like in Hollywood: it looks a lot like contempt."
Outlets across ideological lines – including People – have covered Palin's response to the Cyrus interview. Many of the reader reviews expressed support for Palin's assessment.
"She's right on," one People reader wrote, "all the liberals preach tolerance unless you're a Christian. If Miley Cyrus and Catilyn Jenner are our role models today, we are headed downhill fast." http://www.westernjournalism.com/burn-bristol-palin-utterly-destroys-miley-cyrus-for-comments-about-christianity/
28 Years Ago: ‘Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall!’ : William Federer
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 11:53 AM"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" announced President Ronald Reagan at the Berlin Wall, JUNE 12, 1987.
Begun after Lenin's Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, the Soviet Union existed from 1922 to 1991. With its motto, 'Workers of the world, unite!' the Soviet Union had totalitarian control over an estimated 293 million people spread across 11 time zones.
In the Soviet Union:
-privacy was nonexistent;
-health care was rationed;
-the economy was regulated;
-private industry was collectivized;
-the press was censored;
-political dissent was punished; President Franklin Roosevelt told the delegates of the American Youth Congress, February 10, 1940:
I disliked the regimentation under Communism. I abhorred the indiscriminate killings of thousands of innocent victims.
I heartily deprecated the banishment of religion though I knew that some day Russia would return to religion for the simple reason that four or five thousand years of recorded history have proven that mankind has always believed in God in spite of many abortive attempts to exile God...
The Soviet Union, as everybody who has the courage to face the fact knows, is run by a dictatorship as absolute as any other dictatorship in the world...
Some of you are Communists... You have no American right, by act or deed of any kind, to subvert the Government and the Constitution of this Nation.
President Harry S Truman stated, January 20, 1949:
Communism is based on the belief that man is so weak and inadequate that he is unable to govern himself, and therefore requires the rule of strong masters.
Democracy is based on the conviction that man has the moral and intellectual capacity, as well as the inalienable right, to govern himself with reason and justice.
Communism subjects the individual to arrest without lawful cause, punishment without trial, and forced labor as a chattel of the state.
It decrees what information he shall receive, what art he shall produce, what leaders he shall follow, and what thoughts he shall think.
Democracy maintains that government is established for the benefit of the individual, and is charged with the responsibility of protecting the rights of the individual and his freedom...
These differences between Communism and Democracy do not concern the United States alone.
People everywhere are coming to realize that what is involved is material well-being, human dignity, and the right to believe in and worship God.
President Ronald Reagan began his address at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, JUNE 12, 1987:
Twenty-four years ago, President John F. Kennedy visited Berlin, speaking to the people of this city and the world...
Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe.
From the Baltic, south, those barriers cut across Germany in a gash...
There remain armed guards and checkpoints all the same – still a restriction on the right to travel, still an instrument to impose upon ordinary men and women the will of a totalitarian state...
Reagan continued:
Just as truth can flourish only when the journalist is given freedom of speech, so prosperity can come about only when the farmer and businessman enjoy economic freedom...
There stands before the entire world one great and inescapable conclusion: Freedom leads to prosperity...
General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization:
Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
Reagan concluded:
Perhaps this gets to the root of the matter, to the most fundamental distinction of all between East and West.
The totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship.
The totalitarian world finds even symbols of love and of worship an affront...
He added:
Years ago...the East Germans...erected a secular structure: the television tower at Alexander Platz.
Virtually ever since, the authorities have been working to correct what they view as the tower's one major flaw, treating the glass sphere at the top with paints and chemicals of every kind.
Yet even today when the sun strikes that sphere – that sphere that towers over all Berlin – the light makes the sign of the cross.
There in Berlin, like the city itself, symbols of love, symbols of worship, cannot be suppressed.
President Reagan's vice-president was George H.W. Bush, born JUNE 12, 1924.
-media and entertainment was propagandized;
-education became indoctrination;
-religion was suppressed; and
-human life was valued only by its usefulness to the government. http://www.westernjournalism.com/28-years-ago-mr-gorbachev-tear-down-this-wall/?utm_source=MailChimp&utm_medium=email&utm_content=opinion-articles&utm_campaign=DailyEmail06.12.15
Pastor Saeed Abedini Beaten While Being Held In Iranian Prison
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 11:35 AMPastor Saeed Abedini, held for nearly three years as a prisoner in Iran, was attacked in his prison cell last week. This was not the first time he was beaten since being locked up.
The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) first reported Abedini's attack, which occurred last Wednesday: http://aclj.org/persecuted-church/american-pastor-saeed-abedini-attacked-beaten-by-fellow-prisoners Unprovoked, fellow prisoners attacked Pastor Saeed as he attempted to leave his cell, punching him in the face near his left eye and nose. In addition to physically beating the persecuted pastor, prisoners demolished a small table Pastor Saeed used to study and read.
As he was attacked, Pastor Saeed called out for help. Iranian prison guards did intervene and prevent further injury. However, Pastor Saeed suffered injuries to his face – his eyes beaten black and blue. He was able to be seen briefly by a prison doctor, and thankfully he did not receive any broken bones.
This wasn't the first time he was beaten. Over the course of his nearly three years in prison, he has suffered numerous beatings, including from prison guards. He has sustained internal injuries that require surgery.
With each beating, his condition worsens. Even before this most recent beating, [his wife] Naghmeh testified about the toll it has taken on him, 'I'm not just worried about his physical pain, but his psychological [pain].' http://freebeacon.com/national-security/u-s-pastor-imprisoned-in-iran-beaten-again/
Russian fighter flies dangerously close to US plane: Pentagon
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 11:24 AMWashington (AFP) - A Russian fighter jet flew dangerously close to an American reconnaissance aircraft during an "unprofessional" intercept in international airspace over the Black Sea last month, the Pentagon said Friday.
The American RC-135 was conducting routine operations May 30 when a Russian SU-27 Flanker flew up from behind, passed underneath then crossed over to the American plane's right-hand side, spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said.
"We don't know exactly why this intercept was conducted unprofessionally," he told reporters.
"It may have been a lack of training on the part of the Russian pilot. It may have been just a general level of unprofessionalism of the individual who was flying the Flanker."
CNN reported that the Russian plane came within just 10 feet of the US aircraft. Warren said only that the Russian jet passed at a "distance we felt was unprofessionally and unsafely close."
The US plane was intercepted a second time on the same flight, but that was deemed to have been done appropriately, Warren said.
Russian and US planes routinely monitor each other's movements in international airspace, but this encounter is the latest in a series of incidents sparking concerns over how Russia carries out airborne intercepts.
On April 7, a Russian Flanker jet performed "aggressive manuevers" in close proximity to a US reconnaissance plane in an incident that occurred over the Baltic Sea, in international airspace north of Poland.
The US Navy last month posted a video on YouTube showing a Russian SU-24 jet flying close to the American guided-missile destroyer USS Ross in the Black Sea. The Navy said the Russian jet was not carrying weapons.
NATO jets have in recent months been scrambled to intercept Russian planes approaching Baltic countries' airspace, amid tensions over the crisis in Ukraine. http://portal.tds.net/news/read/article/afp-russian_fighter_flies_dangerously_close_to_us_plan-afp
ISIS Jihadist Tweets Pamela Geller's Home Address, Urges Followers to '#GoForth' "I'm not worried about taking a risk. It
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 11:15 AMInternational Business Times (IBT) reports that a man believed to be British Islamic State jihadist "kingpin" Junaid Hussain tweeted free speech activist Pamela Geller's home address, apartment number and all, accompanied by the hashtag "#GoForth."
The tweet came just hours after a third man connected to a plot to kill her and to murder Boston police was arrested. Hussain's Twitter account, under the name Abu Hussain al-Britani, has since been suspended.
Just last month, two terrorists were killed and one security guard injured in Texas during a controversial "Draw Muhammad" contest organized by Geller, who heads a group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
IBT also reports that New Hampshire man Jerry DeLemus is planning another "Draw Muhammad" event later this year in spite of the shooting. "I'm not worried about taking a risk," DeLemus said Thursday. "It's more important to defend our way of life in this country, our constitutional rights, for everybody," he said. http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/isis-jihadist-tweets-pamela-gellers-home-address-urges-followers-goforth
ISIS Sells Stolen Priceless Artifacts on Facebook : Sarah Fisher
from Doofiegirl on 06/13/2015 11:13 AMIsis is trying to unload the priceless artifacts they have stolen during the looting and pillaging of the Middle East on Facebook.
The terrorist organization has reportedly been using the social media network as they try to sell off the rare and unique artifacts they have seized and stolen as they carve a path of destruction through the Middle East.
Among the goods being offered on the pages recently taken down were golden statues, scrolls written in both Hebrew and Aramaic, clay tablets, and ancient coins, all believed to be taken from Syria.
The pages selling the stolen merchandise were flagged by a journalist and Facebook removed the pages.
Facebook privacy spokesman Matt Steinfeld later told the Fox News; "We may not always be able to identify artifacts as stolen, but insofar as we can when someone reports content to us, we will remove this content."
Estimates put the amount of money raised from the stolen good around $100 million.
"The terrorist organization is believed to be using middlemen to sell the artifacts they plunder, and have made an astonishing amount of money so far according to some reports." http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/isis-sells-stolen-priceless-artifacts-facebook
: ‘Sharia Law Should Be Banned in U.S., All Countries That Cherish Freedom, Liberty’
from Doofiegirl on 06/12/2015 10:31 PM(CNS News) – In response to a BBC report on the barbaric nature of life under the Islamic State in Iraq, Christian evangelist Franklin Graham said sharia (or Islamic) law should be banned from America and "all countries that cherish freedom," adding that women, gays, Christians, and minorites are being "tortured and killed" and President Obama does not seem to know what to do.
Graham also called on people to "pray for all those living under Islam."
"The BBC just published a story about life under radical Islam – what it's really like," said Rev. Graham in a June 11 Facebook post. "This is a vivid reminder of why Sharia law should be banned in the U.S. and all countries that cherish freedom and liberty."
"Some western governments are actually considering allowing Sharia law in certain Muslim communities in their countries – can you believe it?" he said. "ISIS is imposing Sharia law on hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Syrians who want to be free." http://www.teaparty.org/rev-graham-sharia-law-banned-u-s-countries-cherish-freedom-liberty-102820/?promocode=tpo-1771270&utm_source=newsemail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=tpo-1771270#sthash.8tSDLV5I.dpuf
Obama Crushed--House Votes Down Trade Bill : by: Nick Givas
from Doofiegirl on 06/12/2015 10:28 PMDespite claiming to have the votes for days now, the House has voted down a key measure of Obama's Trade Deal. The final tally was a shocking 302-126. Many Americans are relieved, as the bill was said to limit American sovereignty and grant President Obama unprecedent executive powers.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle soundly rejected the measure for a variety of reasons. The bill was being touted by former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate Paul Ryan. However, he could not rally the troops and neither could Obama.
The President paid a visit to capitol hill today to drum up support, but was unsuccesful.
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was among the democracts who voted no. Now the President faces an embarssing defeat at the hands of his own party, as the fate of the entire trade deal is now up in the air.
