Cop kills two young girls, gets probation

I found this post via a Google alert and had to post it here. It's a spot on analysis of the lack of accountability for police.

In case you have forgotten the double standard by which law is applied in North America, here's a reminder. The elites of society (e.g. law enforcement agents) are held to a far lower standard than the average person; cops routinely get "a pass" or a slap on the wrist on criminal activities for which non-elites serve hard, long time.

The Illinois state trooper who killed two sisters will not have to spend a day behind bars. A judge gave Matt Mitchell a plea deal for ten years (30 months each for four counts) probation. Since Mitchell plead guilty to felony charges he will never be allowed to be a police officer again. Mitchell will serve his sentence in Clinton County where he resides. In 2007 Mitchell's car wrecked with Jessica and Kelli Uhl killing them.

Mitchell's attorney says his client was justified when he was driving 126 miles an hour
just moments before the crash. Prosecutors say Mitchell was sending emails and talking on his phone. Illinois State Police released a statement Friday afternoon regarding Mitchell's guilty plea: "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of those who were victims in this tragic incident. Now that the criminal proceedings have concluded, the Illinois State Police will move forward with the internal administrative process as expeditiously as possible, and will take the appropriate action that is warranted."

—The two dead girls were 18 and 13 years old.

—Mitchell was "on duty" at the time he drove across a median and killed the teenagers.

—He was not only driving full throttle, he was also "sending and receiving e-mails just 2.5 seconds before the impact....he also had been talking (with his girlfriend) on his cell phone moments before."

—He had been told approx. 6 minutes before the accident that he was no longer needed at another accident scene, which means he wasn't speeding in response to an emergency.

—He had a prior record of reckless driving; this is his 3rd major accident, one of which required a $1.7 million settlement. And, yet, he was back in the driver's seat of a cop car.

—A witness (Navy Chief Petty Officer J.W. James) claims that Mitchell had no siren on while speeding.

—This was on Black Friday, one of the most congested traffic days, during you would think a cop would be more careful than usual.

—At first, the police blamed a car that cut Mitchell off. The car was not found and the police refused to release a description. When witnesses contradicted this account, the police said 'well, may there wasn't another car. Mitchell's video recorder was either not on or not working. Another version said his car was without a Dash Camera, which is standard issue these days.

—It took over two and 1/2 years to work out the probation deal for Mitchell. Nevertheless, this is the first felony conviction in Illinois against a law officer in "a pursuit" that killed somebody. (I know the word "pursuit" is inaccurate but it is the word being used.)

—Two other people, including a pregnant woman, were injured in a separate vehicle.

—The victims' parents agreed to a plea deal on the charge of 'reckless homicide' because "there was no assurance of a conviction at trial" — that is how difficult it is to convict a cop of anything. —Part of the family's motive may be a civil suit for $24 million that they have brought against Mitchell and the police department; a guilty plea on his part facilitates a large settlement.

—The prosecuting attorney stated that Mitchell "will likely lose his job with the State Police"; he had relieved him of duty pending trial but continued to receive a salary. That's how they punish a recklessly homicidal cop? — they give him a paid vacation?

—Why is his dismissal only likely. A guilty plea on a felony is not automatic grounds for dismissal?

What do you think would happen to an average Joe or Jill who killed two policemen or the children of policemen because they were texting while speeding? I suspect it would more than the 30-months probation Mitchell received. And what happens if he breaks probation? Does anyone seriously believe he would be arrested by a fellow-cop, a member of the brotherhood who saw him swig a beer?

Always remember that the police — and not conventional criminals — are the main threat to the safety of the average peaceful person. The police are there "to serve and protect" themselves and their employers — the judicial system.

These Liberal Sites Don't Want You To Know About George Takei's Racist Rant

Earlier this week, washed up Hollywood D-lister-turned-gay-rights-activist George Takei went on a vicious racist rant against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, calling him a "clown in black face." Takei was regularly trotted out by numerous media outlets as a friendly, familiar, happy mascot for gay marriage in the U.S. But if you get your news from liberal websites like BuzzFeed, ThinkProgress, Huffington Post, or Talking Points Memo, you'd know nothing of Takei's racist rant.

It's kind of a big story, but you don't need to take my word for it. On Twitter, for example, the story is trending. If you search for Takei's name on Google, the rant is the first result supplied by Google News.

As of 4:15 p.m. today, however, BuzzFeed had published exactly 0 stories about Takei's accusation of race treason against Clarence Thomas. That's especially weird considering that BuzzFeed has published 50 stories about Takei, including breaking news items such as "George Takei Reads '50 Shades Of Grey'" and "14 Movies Improved By George Takei."

A search for "George Takei" on Huffington Post's website returns 2,280 results. Unfortunately, none of them is about how George Takei called the only black Supreme Court justice a race traitor.

ThinkProgress is no different. If you search that site for "George Takei" using Google, you'll get 34 results. Not one of them mentions how George Takei called Clarence Thomas a "clown in black face."

But what about Mother Jones? They're usually pretty good about giving big stories that are regularly shared on Facebook and Twitter. And they also enjoy publishing stories mentioning George Takei: 11, to be exact. Alas, not one mentions his racist attack on Thomas.

As you might expect at this point, Talking Points Memo is no different. According to Google, they've posted 234 stories mentioning George Takei, but haven't seen fit to publish anything about how he might be something of a gigantic racist.

The biggest shock of the day, though, is that the Vox piece on Takei's rant is not riddled with egregious errors. That's unusual for them. On the flip side, that's probably only because Vox hasn't published anything at all about Takei's racist take on the news of the day. It's not that they don't like Takei — after all, Vox has published seven pages worth of individual stories about him. It just turns out that "When did George Takei become such a filthy racist?" is apparently not a question the smartest thinkers feel like answering.

For whatever reason, these sites don't seem to want their readers to know what one of the primary cheerleaders of same-sex marriage has to say about minorities who disagree with the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell. If Takei were a conservative, a Republican, a Christian, or a defender of natural marriage, I have to assume his racist attack on a black man who wrote something he didn't like would be front-page news. But it's not. And the only surprising thing about that is that it's not surprising at all.

George Takei Should Stop Gaysplaining Black History To Clarence Thomas

In a nasty, racist rant captured by a Fox affiliate in Arizona, former Star Trek actor-turned-gay rights activist George Takei lashed out at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, calling him a "clown in black face."

Takei's explosive verbal diarrhea, which can be witnessed in full here courtesy of Newsbusters, was prompted by Thomas' dissent to the Supreme Court's Obergefell ruling which declared gay marriage to be a fundamental right protected by the Constitution. Here is the excerpt of Thomas' dissent that led to Takei's meltdown:

Human dignity has long been understood in this country to be innate. When the Framers proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal" and "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights," they referred to a vision of mankind in which all humans are created in the image of God and therefore of inherent worth. That vision is the foundation upon which
this Nation was built.

The corollary of that principle is that human dignity cannot be taken away by the government. Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away.

Because he is a simple man with a simple mind incapable of basic reading comprehension, Takei took this to mean that Thomas was denying the indignity of slavery. So how did Takei respond? Like this:

TAKEI: He is a clown in black face sitting on the Supreme Court. He gets me that angry. He doesn't belong there. And for him to say, slaves have dignity. I mean, doesn't he know that slaves were in chains? That they were whipped on the back. If he saw the movie 12 Years a Slave, you know, they were raped. And he says they had dignity as slaves or – My parents lost everything that they worked for, in the middle of their lives, in their 30s. His business, my father's business, our home, our freedom and we're supposed to call that dignified? Marched out of our homes at gun point. I mean, this man does not belong on the Supreme Court. He is an embarrassment. He is a disgrace to America.

Oh my. Rather than somehow defending or dismissing the institution of slavery, Thomas actually elucidated the logic that formed the foundation of the abolition movement to end American slavery once and for all: that humanity and dignity come not from government, but from God, who makes all men in His image.

It is this fact — that we are all created in the divine image of our Creator — that demands that government recognize the rights of all people, regardless of their color or creed. Government, after all, does not create natural rights. It is merely granted the authority to safeguard them. What Thomas noted was that while slave owners could demean and degrade their slaves, they could never wrest from them the dignity inherent in being a child of God. Far from minimizing the evils of slavery, Thomas was highlighting the revolutionary truth that led to America's founding: "that all men are created equal, [and] that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights."

Takei, however, did not grasp this fairly elementary historical point. Rather than taking Thomas' logic and asserting that it requires the right of marriage to be available to all people — Takei's preferred outcome — Takei went in the exact opposite direction and basically called Clarence Thomas a race traitor for having the audacity to have an opinion not handed down to him by the government. I'm not old enough to remember what life was like when the government thought black people were not entitled to their own opinions, but Clarence Thomas certainly is. Unlike George Takei, Thomas didn't just read about or observe vile, state-sanctioned discrimination against African-Americans; Thomas experienced it first-hand.

The New York Times noted in a book review of Thomas' "My Grandfather's Son" how Thomas experienced the evils of anti-black racism:

His critics might not be moved by his political arguments, but his memoir gives them a man, not a caricature, to attack. Justice Thomas faced enormous obstacles in life. His deadbeat father, referred to only as C, abandoned his family to a life of poverty so extreme that the children did not put sugar on their cereal. Daddy, whose small fuel-oil business provided a modest income, sent Clarence to Catholic schools, but the harsh racial environment in Georgia put enormous pressure on black children trying to move further than their parents.

As one of only two black students at his seminary school, Justice Thomas experienced panic, followed by "a constant state of controlled anxiety." The fear of failure haunted him in a way that no white child could understand, or black parents either, accustomed to living behind the walls of segregation that were now falling down.

Thomas was a teenager by the time his hometown of Savannah was desegregated. He almost certainly remembers separate water fountains, movie theaters, schools, and buses. He didn't just hear about Jim Crow laws; he lived under them. To Thomas, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. wasn't just a brave man on the television, he was the preacher around the corner preparing to change American history forever. Savannah, after all, is home to the church where King, Jr. first practiced his historic "I Have A Dream" speech.

As disgusting as Takei's comments are, they almost certainly spring from the popular belief among many gay rights activists that the gay rights movement is the rightful heir of the Civil Rights movement, and that those who are attracted to members of the same sex have experienced the same struggles and suffering experienced by African-Americans. As a result, by disagreeing with Takei on whether a right to gay marriage can be found in the Constitution, Thomas is also denying the necessity of the Civil Rights movement. In this regard, perhaps it is Takei who needs the history of anti-black discrimination in America explained to him.

To put things into perspective for a moment, black men and women were kidnapped from their homes, separated from their families, and shoved in the cargo holds of boats. Those few who survived the voyage across the Atlantic were then chained and marched to the top of a platform where they were sold like cattle. They were beaten, raped, and enslaved. The United States government denied their very humanity. And even after the United States fought its bloodiest war in history in order to acknowledge and ensure their freedom, they were treated as foreigners in their own land for another century. They were denied the right to vote, the right to sit on a jury, and a right to defend themselves from violence. They were forced to endure show trials where they were judged not by their peers, but by individuals who believed their skin tone was their destiny. To this day they continue to be profiled not by their actions, but by their mere appearance.

I do not doubt for a moment the struggles and hardships experienced by homosexual men and women in this country, but it strains credulity to compare those struggles to what millions upon millions of black people were forced to endure for centuries. Out of one side of his mouth Takei claims the mantle of the American Civil Rights movement, while out of the other he spews vicious racial slurs and accusations of racial treason at a man who remembers what it was like to have the boot of Jim Crow on his neck.

Clarence Thomas does not need George Takei to patronizingly explain to him how hard life was (and is) for many black people. Thomas may not have legions of Facebook followers clamoring for his next pun or picture posted by an army of comedic writers on his payroll, but he is one thing that Takei is not: a black person with a God-given right to his own opinion. And maybe that fact is what makes Takei so angry.

 Here is today's Devotion....

"Jesus Is There Through The Storms"

The other day as raindrops scatter across my windows of my home as the storm is going on outside. As I curl up to spend time praying. And these words come to my heart: "When all is said and done the storms I go through in life and what is happening in this world with all going on. The one thing I know ....I get to go home to Jesus."

In the moment as I sit I'm having my time for Him to put all my burdens and fears , and cares before the Lord. So many things happening in the world and I wonder why ? But I smile as I realize God is in control and he has the plans set for what is to be . I know no matter what happens in this life, when all is said and done we get to go home to Jesus for eternity.

That reality gives us the strength and courage to serve: Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet. John 13:3-5

We are called to be foot-washers and holy risk takers, too. To step outside our comfort zones, face the storms. We can only do that if we are sure of where we're ultimately headed and who will be waiting for us.

I close my eyes and all the questioning stops. I remember again that I am loved and Jesus loves us all . It is not because of what I do but because of who I belong to. Home is where my heart is and I'm not in heaven yet. But I'm learning this: Home is also Who's within my heart.

And as I whisper a prayer while the storm subsides, and knowing there will be many paths of storms on this earth the one thing I know is Jesus is there.
